Core mechanical threat / Prototype endoskeleton

The Mimic

The Mimic, otherwise known as M2, is a large animatronic endoskeleton created by Edwin Murray. Mimic was originally designed to watch over Edwin's son, David Murray, but after David's passing, and the introduction to the M2 program to the Mimic, Edwin would go on to take out his frustrations on the machine, introducing it to violence. The Mimic now acts as the overarching antagonist of the post-UCN collaborative era of FNaF, as well as the Tales from the Pizzaplex anthology series.

It acts as the final boss of FNaF: Security Breach's Burn it All Down ending, as well as the final boss and overarching antagonist of the game's DLC, RUIN. It also acts as the primary antagonist of its dedicated game, Five Nights at Freddy's: Secret of the Mimic.

A potential form it takes on known as Glitchtrap, also acts as the main antagonist of FNaF VR: Help Wanted and its sequel, FNaF: Help Wanted 2.

Speculation

While unconfirmed, the Tales from the Pizzaplex books heavily imply that Burntrap, and by extension, Glitchtrap, are actually the Mimic and Mimic1 program respectively. Evidence for this includes things such as the Mimic having it's arm curved in the same manner as Burntrap, Mimic wearing the corpse of one of it's victims in the past (similar to Burntrap), and Mimic being suggested to have witnessed the MCI (Missing Children's Incident), which could explain why Glitchtrap and Burntrap mimic Afton. Other evidence to suggest this includes the general timeline of the epilogues, Glitchtrap mimicking Tape Girl's voice in Help Wanted, Mimic's left arm being the same model as Burntrap's, as well as Help Wanted 2's usage of Glitchtrap, and Secret of the Mimic's Bad Ending mirroring the Bad Ending of Help Wanted. However nothing is directly confirmed as of now.

Other pieces of speculation include the idea that the Mimic program could have been the circuit board that was scanned into Help Wanted, or that Endo-02, and possibly Endo-01, are Mimic models, as it's suggested that Fazbear Entertainment made endoskeletons based off the Mimic, though there is not as much evidence to support these theories in particular.

Appearance

The Mimic

Old Endoskeleton

The Mimic's main body in RUIN is that of an extremely tall endoskeleton, seemingly made of various different animatronic parts. It's left shin and right thigh are almost entirely wire, and multiple nails pointing out of it's right shin. One of its feet greatly resembles Springtrap's feet, and its entire left arm is that of Burntrap's. Its right arm is identical to its left, up until the wrist area where it seems to be a different endoskeleton, with a hand that is significantly different to its other, having a different, blockier shape and one less finger. It's lower jaw is mostly wire, with all of it's teeth being small, almost human-like teeth connected by small metallic joints. A small bit of green fabric is stuck to the endoskeleton's right cheek, while a larger bit of blue fabric is draped over the upper right side of its head. Finally, the Mimic's eyes hold two small glowing orange pupils, which change to glow white during its jumpscare.

M2

The Mimic's body in Secret of the Mimic is much cleaner than that of its RUIN appearance, though still remaining consistent with it in many areas. It appears as a much simpler endoskeleton, with a thinner frame that holds a large battery box in the center of its chest, and a more hollowed-out head connected with metal framing and wires. Its face is mostly identical in general shape, though its eyes are further apart and it has a metallic guard around its skeletal mouth. Its limbs are made to extend and retract so it can fit into costumes, with them being made up of compressive rubber tubes and hydraulic pistons, as well as folding mechanisms on its right forearm and left shin. Both of the Mimic's hands are vastly different from each other, with the left one being a claw with only three fingers, and the other appearing as a basic four-fingered endoskeleton hand. Its feet are triangular with three toes, as well as an extendable heel, seen only when the Mimic inhabits Nurse Dollie. Finally, its eyes are heated electrical coils that glow a bright orange-yellow color.

Mimic is typically a very tall and lanky endoskeleton outside of suits, but when mimicking David, it compresses itself into a child-sized form, and its eyes begin to glow a light blue instead of the usual orange-yellow.

Burntrap

Similar to Springtrap and Scraptrap from previous FNAF games, Burntrap is a withered Spring Bonnie animatronic infused with a rotting corpse. However, unlike the previous two, very little of the suit remains on his body, only having the head, ears, torso, pelvis, left thigh, and left foot. His endoskeleton appears to be a mixture of the springlock, glamrock and nightmare endoskeletons, as well as being infused with tendrils of burnt flesh, and his right hand having two skeletal fingers rather than robotic ones. Finally, the bottom half of Burntrap's mask is gone, revealing his decaying jaw.

Mascot

The mascot suit that the Mimic wears during the Scooper ending is that of a torn up lion wearing a blue varsity sweater. It's left arm is a mixture of the lion suit's arm and the arm of a blue bird suit, with a small magenta bead-bracelet on it's wrist, and the lion's hand. Its right arm is from an elephant clown suit, but is almost entirely ripped open, with most of the endoskeleton arm and hand showing. The feet are made up of the bird and elephant suits respectively, and the left leg is of unknown origin, and has a large tear in it showing bits of the suit's wire-frame. The lion's head is ripped open, with the snout entirely missing and it's jaw drooped downward. The area around its left eye is torn, and its right eye is entirely missing. A bit of blue fabric is stuck to the side of its head, and on the other side is the lion's ear, poorly stitched onto the mane. Finally, a large gash in the suit's stomach has resulted in two large wires dangling out of it.

M2RND

While pursuing the player in the prototype Freddy's and Edwin's home, the Mimic takes on an alternative appearance internally known as M2RND, which is a suit made of various prototype parts from the classic animatronics. Its torso is made up of a metallic frame around its endoskeleton with a blank, placeholder version of Chica's bib over its chest that reads "LOGO HERE" in black, capital letters. The back of its torso has two small portions of suit shells attached to them. Its right arm is made up of two broken prototype shells, with the upper arm having metal wire sticking out of it, the lower half being split into two separate pieces, and the elbow having an animatronic's lower jaw attached over it. Its left arm is also made up of two broken prototype shells, with the upper arm being made up of four different pieces of limb shells all wrapped onto the arm with colorful wires, and the lower forearm having a template shell and what appears to be a bit of Foxy's arm stapled together with small metal plates. The left shoulder of the suit is padded with the empty head of Mr. Cupcake, with wires wrapping through its eye sockets to attach it to the endoskeleton. Its right hand is a pink version of a classic Animatronic's hand, and its left hand is the same as the Mimic's, albeit with Foxy's hook duck-taped to it. Its pelvis has a small bit of red metal attached to it, wrapping over the upper left of the suit piece. Its right thigh is made up of two prototype shells wrapped together with zip ties, and its shin appears to be the prototype suit for Foxy, while the right foot is a broken version of Chica's. Its left thigh is Foxy's prototype shell, which appears to have been re-melded together, and while its left shin lacks any plating on the front, only having a singular plate on the back, it does have half of Freddy's prototype mask acting as a pseudo knee-pad. Finally, its mask appears to be made up of an older version of Bonnie's. While the mask lacks paint, it holds two empty eye-sockets that the Mimic's eyes peer out of, white metal framing for the animatronic's jaw, and two rabbit ears, one missing its suit, and one having the unpainted suit on it with a small speaker in the upper left portion of the ear. Finally, the mask has half of Chica's mask welded to the left side of it, with wires going between the two mask's eye sockets to keep them together.

Behavior

Security Breach

During the fight against him, Burntrap walks between three different rooms on the other side of the underground pizzeria. Gregory has to watch for which room Burntrap is currently in and press each room's corresponding button when he attempts to take control of Glamrock Freddy. Doing so causes the room to erupt into flames and damage him, stopping the corruption attempt. Failure to do so in time will have Glamrock Freddy's eyes turn purple, making him become hostile towards Gregory.

He is the only antagonist in the game to not feature a jumpscare of any kind, as he never attacks Gregory himself. Instead, Burntrap sends the broken Glamrock Chica, Roxanne Wolf, and Montgomery Gator after him. The Blob also joins in trying to attack Gregory after Burntrap is damaged a few times, though he doesn't seem to be in control of it.

RUIN

The Mimic speaks to Cassie using Gregory's voice for most of the game, guiding her to deactivate the Security Nodes throughout the facility. Eventually, once it's encountered, it will attempt to grab Cassie before being stopped by Roxanne. After defeating Roxanne, the player enters a chase sequence in which the Mimic will attempt to kill the player before they can make it to their respective ending. The Mimic's appearance is also altered depending on which ending the player can get.

Help Wanted 2

While Mimic does appear in Help Wanted 2, its purpose is nothing more than a gallery statue of its Mascot disguise from RUIN.

Secret of the Mimic

Throughout Secret of the Mimic, the Mimic takes on many different suits and identities to pursue Arnold/the player. When controlling unique characters such as Jackie or Dollie, its behavior in turn becomes more unique to fit the animatronics in question.

For the majority of the game, however, the Mimic will act identically between its various mascot suits. Whenever the player enters an area where the Mimic is able to begin hunting them, it will select one of the standing mascot suits at random and begin to roam around the room, occasionally stopping to look around. Upon spotting the player, the Mimic will briefly stop before charging the player. To avoid the costume-wearing-Mimic during these encounters, the player can use distractions around the room to lure it to certain areas, or hide inside lockers or under crawlspaces. If the Mimic captures the player, it will jumpscare them. The Mimic's behavior does not change when it picks different suits, though internally there are three suit "body types" that will determine the Mimic's animations depending on its chosen character. The Mimic also adapts the above behavior once it has adopted the M2RND suit.

After the player makes it to Edwin's home office however, the Mimic will abandon all costumes entirely and pursue the player itself, constantly following them. During this chase sequence the Mimic will occasionally fall behind only to then show up again in front of the player, causing them to shift directions.

Unused Content

Burntrap specifically holds a lot of unused content within the files of Security Breach, including a death and running animation, as well as data for a chase sequence. On top of this, the two lines from the second trailer spoken by Matthew Curtis were originally meant to belong to him. However, Matthew Curtis' voice lines never got used, leading Burntrap to remain mostly silent throughout the whole encounter. It is unknown as to why these were all left unused.

Trivia

General Trivia

  • While it is still ambiguous on if Burntrap and the Mimic are one in the same, a large portion of fans have accepted the idea, especially after RUIN heavily implied this with identical claw marks found near Burntrap's recharge station and Mimic's room.

Security Breach

  • Burntrap is the only antagonist in Security Breach to not have a jumpscare of any kind.
  • It is unknown how Glitchtrap was able to leave his body for the events of VR, or how he re-enters it for the events of Security Breach.
  • Despite a line of dialog in a trailer clearly coming from some form of William Afton, Burntrap never speaks throughout his entire encounter.
  • Upon close inspection, it can be seen that the unused model for Spring Bonnie that was originally intended for Help Wanted was partially reused and edited for Burntrap's mask.
    • It's likely the rest of his suit comes from the model as well, though it's hard to tell due to the reference image of Spring Bonnie only showing his head.
  • Burntrap's name, while never mentioned in-game, was confirmed via his files, as well as Steel Wool's blog post for the February patch.
  • While it is unknown who voices Burntrap's various laughs, it is possible that it might've been Matthew Curtis, as he was originally meant to voice the character.
  • According to the Character Encyclopedia, "Burntrap" is not the character's canon name.
    • Despite this, no alternative alias is given to the character.
      • These could be intended as further indications of Burntrap being the Mimic.

RUIN

  • The Mimic is said to be able to morph its body to fit into any suit, which could explain why it's notably shorter when in the Mascot suit.
    • This ability is later directly shown in Secret of the Mimic, both when Mimic exits the Dollie suit, and when Mimic begins to mimic David in the secret ending.
  • The mascot suit Mimic wears in RUIN is a combination of three other suits within the game, being an elephant, a bird, and a lion.
    • The former two appear in-game shrouded in darkness in the room Mimic is in, meanwhile the complete version of the lion appears to be entirely unused.
      • Strangely, neither the elephant nor the bird are removed from the game when the Scooper Ending's criteria are met, despite both of them being a part of Mimic's amalgamation suit.
  • Mimic's mascot suit is theorized to meant to resemble Gregory, who it is mimicking the entire game, with the lion being a base being the primary evidence for this, as it holds brown hair, and a blue shirt.
    • This could explain why Mimic had torn off the snout of the lion, as it could have been an attempt to make the suit look more "human" in appearance.
  • The Mimic's design in RUIN notably has a small box on its chest that looks as if it once connected to something. With the release of Secret of the Mimic, this box is very likely the original plug of the Mimic's battery pack, which it may have ripped out of itself after the events of the game as a way to prevent itself from ever being repaired.

Help Wanted 2

  • Mimic's first gallery icon in Help Wanted 2 uses a fan-render featured on the Five Nights at Freddy's Wiki's article on the character.
    • The icon was later replaced with one that both used a render made by Steel Wool, but also more accurately reflected Mimic's in-game appearance.
  • Internal text in Help Wanted 2 refers to the White Tiger's doll as "Mimic" likely due to their connection.
  • Mimic's mascot disguise being specifically chosen for its gallery statue in Help Wanted 2 could be an indication at RUIN's Scooper Ending being canon, though this is speculative.

Secret of the Mimic

  • Despite being genderless, F10-N4 always refers to Mimic as "he" and "him" due to it wanting M2 to mimic David, much like how F10-N4's M1 program mimics Fiona.
  • Leon Riskin, the primary composer for many FNaF games including Secret of the Mimic, made a joke on Twitter that implied the Mimic is made out of tungsten. This could potentially explain how the Mimic was able to withstand the intense heat of the smelting pool, as tungsten has the highest fusion point of all metals.
  • The file name given to Mimic's amalgamated suit form, "M2RND", is likely a reference to this being the form Mimic takes on in MCM's RnD department.
  • When in a mascot suit or in the M2RND form, the Mimic will sometimes look behind itself before charging the player. This could be another form of the bot mimicking behavior it saw, potentially mimicking its own victims running from it.
  • Some internal text refers to M2RND as "Deathtrap" (sometimes spelt "DeathTrap") keeping up with the series theming of having evil rabbit characters have "trap" at the end of their name.
    • Ironically, due to the game's placement in the timeline, "Deathtrap" would be the technical first instance of this pattern in-universe.
    • This is the second time the naming scheme has been utilized for Mimic instead of William Afton, with the first being Burntrap.
